【History】
Institute of Petrochemistry, Heilongjiang Academy of Sciences(IPHAS), formerly known as Northeast Institute of Petrochemistry, was established in 1962 as a subbranch of Chinese Academy of Science (CAS). It was under administration of Heilongjiang province from 1970 to 1985 and co-funded by SINOPEC and Heilongjiang Academy of Sciences (HAS) after 1985.It is one of the famous institutes in R&D of arene oxidation, olefin oxidation and macromolecule adhesives in China.

【Infrastructure and facilities】
To support the scientific research, HIP maintains a multi-million dollar infrastructure and facilities. The building-area of the multipurpose building is 25,000 square meters and the pilot plant covers more than 6,500 square meters, which provide workspace for administration, R&D and production. The facilities include:
? Heilongjiang Research Center for Adhesive Engineering and Technology (RCA)- RCA mainly specializes in R&D of adhesive engineering technology, also provides customers with related services. It has seven research teams which focus on one or more fields.
? Center for Fine Chemicals(CFC)-Having higher research level and stronger development ability, CFC is one of the most influential domestic research institutes focusing on the systematic R&D of sulfur alcohol and series products of sulfur ether as well as aromatic compounds. IFC and its former have accomplished many important projects for the Ministry, SINOPEC and S&T Committee of Province.
? Industrial Catalysis Key Lab- It is one of the three key labs of Heilongjiang province. The lab, equipped with general chemical laboratory facilities for analysis and catalyst preparation, performs contract research and development for its clients in catalysis area.
? Pilot plant- The building-area of the pilot plant is more than 6,500 square meters. It has a pilot-scale hydrogenation facility, a set of adhesive production facility and a set of catalysts evaluation and production facility
? Analysis and Testing Labs for Fine Chemicals and Gas Products- To serve our clients and scientific research as well to enhance quality control, HIP equipped this section with general chemical laboratory facilities for analysis and modern instruments such as GC-MS, IR, DSC, element analytical instrument, GC, AES, AAS, preparation LC, HPLC, high purity gas analytical instrument, omnipotent extension instrument and fatigue test machine. Some special tests are performed by sharing equipments with special analytical institute.
? China Adhesive Industrial Information Website (CAIIW) and Heilongjiang Institute of Petrochemistry Website - As a propaganda window, HIP constructed the two Websites, through which both domestic and international customers can approach to HIP easily. CAIIW is an information-exchanging platform for the dynamic adhesive market and bridges the suppliers and demanders.

【Achievements】
In the past 42 years, most of the scientific research tasks that HIP had undertaken were from the State, the Province and the Ministry. Most of the projects had close relation to national defence and economic construction. Over 150 of 600 achievements have been awarded prize by the State, the Provincial Government or the Ministry.19 achievements and inventions have been granted patents. The achievements have been widely used in the fields of aviation, spaceflight, warship, machine-building industry, electronic industry, chemical industry, pharmaceuticals industry, automobile industry, construction and people’s daily life etc., with prominent economic and social benefits. Representative projects commercialized:

? 20,000 tons/year of ethyl acetate
? 1,000 tons/year of β-mercaptioethanol
? 300 tons/years of monochlorophthalic anhydride
? 300 tons/year of polymerization grade AMPS

【Publication】
Chemistry and Adhesion, an academic journal published by HIP, is a core journal of science and technology and has gained national and world-wide recognition.

【Human resource and education】
HIP’s staff of 201 includes eminent scientists, researchers, engineers and industry experts who are knowledgeable about their research fields. There are 3 state-level experts, 3 province-level experts and two province-level reserved subject pioneers. Also 21 members enjoy the governmental allowance. Among the academic staff, there are 3 doctors and 15 masters working in laboratories.
In 1984, HIP launched a graduate program in physics and chemistry of polymer drawing upon the broad spectrum expertise and strengths among HIP’s staff in said fields and launched graduate program in chemical engineering and technology in collaboration with Heilongjiang University from 2003. In addition, Postdoctoral Programme of HIP was started from 2004.

【Certification】
Improving product quality, service, and overall value to customers is at the heart of HIP’s strategies. As an instrumental part of this strategy, HIP has adopted ISO 9001:2000 and GJB9001A-2001 as model for quality assurance and has obtained certifications. In addition, HIP has passed the certification of secret keeping of weapon equipments research and production in 2004.
